What is Great Lakes Unflavoured Beef Gelatin?
Great Lakes Unflavoured Beef Gelatin is a single-ingredient culinary gelatin made from grass-fed bovine sources. It is colourless, virtually odourless and unflavoured, making it suitable for both sweet and savoury recipes.
What ingredients does it contain?
The only ingredient is bovine gelatin. It contains no added flavours, colours, sweeteners, fillers or preservatives.
What can I make with beef gelatin?
It can be used to make homemade gummies, jelly, marshmallows, mousse, panna cotta, puddings, no-bake desserts and aspic. It may also be used as a thickener or stabiliser in soups, sauces, jams and other recipes.
How do I prepare the gelatin?
For a standard firm gel:
- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of gelatin over ½ cup of cold water.
- Leave it to bloom for approximately 5 minutes.
- Stir the bloomed gelatin into 1½ cups of very hot liquid until completely dissolved.
- Add any flavours or sweeteners, pour into your chosen container or mould, and refrigerate until set.
The amount of gelatin can be adjusted depending on whether you prefer a softer or firmer texture.
What does “blooming” gelatin mean?
Blooming means allowing the gelatin powder to absorb cold liquid before it is dissolved in hot liquid. This helps the gelatin hydrate evenly and reduces the chance of lumps in the finished recipe.
Can I mix it directly into a cold drink?
Beef gelatin is not designed to dissolve directly into cold drinks. It should first be bloomed in cold liquid and then dissolved into a hot or very warm preparation. Once cooled, it will thicken or form a gel. For a powder that dissolves easily in both hot and cold drinks without gelling, Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate may be more suitable.
What is the difference between gelatin and collagen hydrolysate?
Both products are derived from collagen and have a similar amino acid profile, but they behave differently in recipes.
Gelatin dissolves in warm liquid and forms a gel as it cools, making it ideal for gummies, desserts and thickening. Collagen hydrolysate has been broken into smaller peptides, allowing it to dissolve in hot or cold liquids without creating a gel.
Does it have a beef taste or smell?
The gelatin is unflavoured, colourless and virtually odourless. When properly dissolved, it should not noticeably change the flavour of your recipe.
How much gelatin is in each serving?
One serving is approximately 1 tablespoon, or 12 g, of gelatin. A 454 g container provides approximately 37 servings. Each serving contains approximately 11 g of protein; always refer to the current product label for complete nutritional information.
Is this a complete protein?
Gelatin supplies collagen-derived amino acids, but it is not considered a complete protein because it does not provide all essential amino acids in sufficient amounts. It is best used alongside a varied diet rather than as the sole source of dietary protein.
Is Great Lakes Beef Gelatin gluten-free?
Yes. According to the manufacturer, the product is gluten-free, contains no preservatives and is iGen Non-GMO tested. It is also certified Keto and Paleo-Friendly.
Is the gelatin Kosher or Halal certified?
The product is currently Kosher certified. However, Great Lakes Wellness states that its products are no longer Halal certified. Customers requiring a specific religious certification should check the current packaging before use.
Where is Great Lakes Beef Gelatin made?
According to Great Lakes Wellness, its beef gelatin is made in Brazil and sourced from grass-fed cattle raised on rural properties under veterinary supervision.
Does the product contain sulphites?
The manufacturer states that sulphites are not added to Great Lakes Wellness products. The product is tested to verify sulphite levels below 10 ppm. Customers with severe sensitivities should review the current label and consult their healthcare professional before use.
How should I store the gelatin?
Keep the container tightly closed and store it in a cool, dry place away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight. Always use a clean, dry spoon to prevent moisture from entering the container.
Is this product suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
No. This gelatin is derived from bovine sources and is therefore not suitable for vegetarian or vegan diets.
Can children use beef gelatin?
Gelatin is commonly used as a food ingredient in family recipes. The appropriate serving will depend on the recipe, the child’s age and individual dietary needs. Parents should consult a qualified healthcare professional when using it for a specific nutritional or health purpose.
Can I use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Gelatin is commonly used as a culinary ingredient. However, anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a medical condition or following a medically prescribed diet should seek individual advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
